My Brother’s Keeper Scholars Participate in National Day of Service
Scholars in NECSD’s My Brother’s Keeper Program (MBK) engaged in a National Day of Service on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by handing out masks to community members. The young men were at the Newburgh Free Library for an hour and then headed to several local senior homes to hand out masks to residents. The overall goal is to communicate the continued need to remain vigilant and to help stop the spread of COVID 19.
The MBK scholars were joined by MBK mentor Dr. Richard Brown, his wife and fellow NFA teacher Dr. Kristy Brown and their family, Board of Education Vice President, Mr. Philip Howard, City of Newburgh Mayor, Mr. Torrance Harvey, and Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services Dr. Pedro Roman.
Masks were donated by the Rotary’s Million Mask Challenge last week. Scholars who volunteered during the event included: Kweku Antwi-Obeng (12th grade, NFA North), Jesus Martinez (12th grade, NFA West Campus), Tyler Walters (12th grade, NFA West Campus), Semaj Branch (11th grade, NFA West Campus), James Brantley (12th grade, NFA West Campus), Julien Johnson, (12th grade, NFA P-TECH). My Brother’s Keeper is offered in every school throughout the Newburgh Enlarged City School District.
Later in the day, the Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Team handed out 100 shelf-stable bags of food to families as part of the same National Day of Service initiative.
