What does being a BOE member mean?
The Board of Education members are a nine person policy-making body which operates within the laws of the State of New York. Each member is elected for a three-year term; terms of office are staggered with elections held every year. The Board is responsible for approving the district's budget, adopting all policies and curriculum, and evaluating the superintendent. The authority of the Board is as a whole and no Board member may act as an official of the district except when the board meets in a regular or a special session. The Board of Trustees are elected to represent all of the people of the school district. In making its decisions, the Board is guided by what is in the best interest of the entire district.
Responsibilities of a Board Member
With school children always their ultimate focus, school board members act officially at the board table, working with other board members to serve students and accomplish the following:
- Create a shared vision for the future of education
- Set the direction of the school district to achieve the highest student performance
- Provide rigorous accountability for student achievement results
- Develop a budget and present it to the community, aligning district resources to improve achievement
- Support a healthy school district culture for work and learning
- Create strategic partnerships with the community stakeholders
- Build the district’s progress through continuous improvement
- Adopt and maintain current policies
- Hire and evaluate the superintendent
- Ratify collective bargaining agreements
- Maintain strong ethical standards
Translations
Website
There is a translation button at the top of each district webpage. Webpages can also be translated using your web browsers built in translation function. On a desktop right-click on the webpage and select translate from the menu (if available on your web browser). Chrome browser is your best option for this. On a mobile device click on the three dots in most browser top right corner and select Translate (again Chrome browser works best for this)
YouTube Videos
The youtube videos are automatically captained in realtime in English. After 48 hours, videos subtitles can be translated to other languages via youtube's automatic translations. You can read more about that here.
