Student Requirements
Program Requirements For The Middle Grades (Grds 5-8)
Grades 5 & 6:
All students shall receive instruction that is designed to facilitate their attainment of the State intermediate learning standards in the seven general curriculum areas:
- Mathematics (including arithmetic)
- Science and Technology
- English Language Arts (including reading, writing, listening, and speaking)
- Social Studies (including geography and United States history)
- Languages other than English
- The Arts (including visual arts, music, dance, and theatre)
- Career Development and Occupational Students
- Where student need is established: Bilingual Education and/or English as a second language
- Health Education
- Physical Education
- Family and Consumer Sciences
Grades 7 & 8:
All students shall be provided instruction designed to enable them to achieve, by the end of grade eight, State intermediate learning standards through:
- English Language Arts | two units of study
- Social Studies | two units of study
- Science | two units of study
- Mathematics | two units of study
- Technology Education | one unit of study
- Home and Career Skills | three-quarters of a unit of study
- Physical Education (basically every other day)
- Health Education | one half unit of study
- The Arts | one half unit of study in visual arts and one half unit of study in music
- Library and Information Skills | the equivalent of one period per week in grades 7 and 8
- Languages other than English
- Career Development and Occupational Studies
Grade Level Classification
According to the Newburgh Board of Education Policy: It shall be the policy of the Board of Education to establish the requirements of each student’s progression from one grade level to the next grade level in high school. In order to progress from Grade 8 to Grade 9, the student:
- Must successfully complete a minimum of three (3) core subjects (Math, English Language Arts, Science, or Social Studies) AND must achieve at or above Performance Level 2 on the most recent English Language Arts and Mathematics assessments;
OR
Must successfully complete a minimum of two (2) core subjects (Math, English Language Arts, Science, or Social Studies) AND must achieve at or above Performance Level 3 on the most recent English Language Arts and Mathematics assessments. - Students who have repeated Grade 8 twice will be placed into Grade 9.
- Exceptions to the above requirements will be considered, upon a written parent/guardian request on behalf of a student. A decision to progress the student may be made, if agreed to by both the Middle School and High School Principals.
Requirements for High School Graduation

All students must pass 4 Required regents examinations: one in each discipline (Math, English, Science, Social Studies) + 1 Pathway (CDOS, CTE, STEM, Humanities, Arts, LOTE)
