Vails Gate STEAM Academy Gets A Special Visit From IBM!
A volunteer, Darlene Shamsid-Deen, from IBM came to Vails Gate STEAM Academy to present our 5th graders with an engineering challenge. This was a visit timed in recognizing National Engineering Week. Ms. Shamsid-Deen is an IBM Class Manager, Software & Solutions Top Gun who volunteered to help spread the word about STEM careers to our 5th graders. She presented the students with a challenge based on the recent winter Olympics, where the students had to create a ramp for a marble to be propelled the furthest. The marble was sent down a PVC pipe and the students had to create the ramp that would send the marble the furthest. They planned, created, and tested their designs using the Engineering Design process, then improved and retested. It was a fun day of engineering.
