A letter from our Superintendent to students and families at Newburgh Free Academy, Main Campus

Dear Newburgh Free Academy, Main Campus families,

The safety and well-being of your children is our highest priority. I am writing this letter to inform you about a recent event that requires your attention. 

This week, we became aware of a video posted on social media that indicated a threat to Newburgh Free Academy, Main Campus. NECSD staff and law enforcement investigated the matter. Appropriate and immediate disciplinary actions were taken. 

While we handle all threats such as these in a serious manner, we are also diligent about pursuing those who make false claims and jeopardize the safety and learning environment of our scholars. Unfortunately, social media can be the vehicle for sharing inaccurate information. We remind parents and students how quickly rumors can start, and how damaging and distracting gossip can be. School districts that follow up on false leads and misinformation take valuable time and focus away from other student issues, and can even distract from events that might truly pose a safety threat.

Please keep in mind that information you read on social media or hear from others may be based on rumors. When discussing situations involving our students on social media or in other forums, please remember to avoid sharing or repeating information that might not be true. Oftentimes, it is unlikely you have all of the facts needed for an accurate understanding of a situation. Please remind your child(ren) of this as well.

Please help us remind your child(ren) to speak to an adult if they ever hear of this type of threat to their school. It is through the work of all that we are able to love, support, and protect our scholars.

Estimadas familias de Newburgh Free Academy Main Campus,

La seguridad y el bienestar de sus hijos es nuestra más alta prioridad. Estoy escribiendo esta carta para informarles sobre un evento reciente que requiere su atención.

Esta semana, nos dimos cuenta de un video publicado en las redes sociales que indicaba una amenaza para Newburgh Free Academy Main Campus. El personal de NECSD y la policía investigaron el asunto. Se tomaron medidas disciplinarias apropiadas e inmediatas.

Si bien manejamos todas las amenazas como estas de una manera seria, también somos diligentes en perseguir a aquellos que hacen afirmaciones falsas y ponen en peligro la seguridad y el ambiente de aprendizaje de nuestros estudiantes. Desafortunadamente, las redes sociales pueden ser el vehículo para compartir información inexacta. Recordamos a los padres y estudiantes la rapidez con la que pueden comenzar los rumores y cuán dañinos y molestos pueden ser los chismes. Los distritos escolares que siguen pistas falsas y desinformación toman un tiempo valioso y se alejan de otros problemas estudiantiles, e incluso pueden distraer la atención de eventos que realmente pueden representar una amenaza para la seguridad.

Tengan en cuenta que la información que lee en las redes sociales o que escuchan de otras personas puede estar basada en rumores. Al hablar de situaciones que involucran a nuestros alumnos en las redes sociales o en otros foros, recuerden evitar compartir o repetir información que podría no ser cierta. A menudo, es poco probable que tengan todos los datos necesarios para una comprensión precisa de una situación. Por favor recuérdeles a sus hijos esto también.
