The Fullerton Crew at NFA Main Campus - For All of Your Design Needs!
Mr. Gebhardt’s Vis Com 3 scholars presented to Newburgh Free Academy, Main Campus faculty this week. Scholars gave a brief presentation about what their “Fullerton Crew” does and the services they offer.
“We use words and images to create designs, fliers, and logos for your class, if you’re starting a club, if you have an event, or anything else you can think of.”
The Fullerton Crew accepts all work that comes their way, whether inside the district or a local business in the community. Scholars will sit down with members of the organization to collect an idea of the current brand of the group and then the visions they have for the purpose of the work.
“The helping and the doing is where the learning occurs. Especially when they’re working with an adult or someone from the ‘real world.’” Mr. Jeffrey Gebhardt, Vis Com 3 teacher
12th graders, Nastasia Jackson, Dylan Michalauskas, and Emilio Velazquez spoke on behalf of the Fullerton Crew
Students gave insight on the skills they’re developing in Vis Com 3 and with their work with the Fullerton Crew and how those skills may translate to their lives beyond Academy Field.
“I want to be a graphic designer for a big company. I’m not sure which one yet.” Brenda Velazquez, 11th grader passed out fliers to the faculty
“I want to be an Animator, so a lot of what I'm learning now is really relevant.” Zoe Tether, 12th grader passed out fliers to the faculty
Students who spoke during the presentation
Emilio Velazquez, 12th grader “I want to be a computer technician. I’ve been doing graphic design forever. It just comes naturally to me and I really like it.”
Nastasia Jackson, 12th grader
“I want to be a social worker. When I first started, I didn’t actually want to take it, but Mr. Gebhardt broke it down for us. You don’t need to be able to draw to be a designer. At this point, I have taken it for three years, so I obviously grew to love it. A lot of things are developed through visual communications.”
Dylan Mickalauskas, 12th
“I want to be an Engineer. My older brother took it and told me to take it to get my art credit and now it’s my 3rd year taking it!”
The consensus among the Fullerton Crew is that Mr. Gebhardt’s room and working together is like a community center. “It feels like a community center. Like a shared space where we all know each other, respect each other, and support each other and the work we’re doing. It has to be that way to encourage the creativity in a positive way.”
