GAMS Scholars were Treated to a Hispanic Culture Celebration Dance Performance
GAMS scholars were treated to a Hispanic Heritage celebration when Toni Llanos, affectionately known as "Mama T", and her M'POWER dance company visited and performed at their school. Mama T is a professional dancer, choreographer, and educator, whose experience spans over three decades. Not only did M'POWER perform, but they also provided the students with a brief history lesson on the African roots of each dance move, and the influence within Latin/Caribbean music. Ms. Lllanos explained and demonstrated the roots of Latin music- beginning with African beats, then creating Bomba and now Salsa (originating in Cuba and Puerto Rico). At one point during the performance, scholars were invited to stand up and dance to the Afro-Caribbean music. Mama T incorporates African rhythms and dance combinations and encouraged the GAMS students to follow along. In her classes, participants of all ages are inspired with high energy, uplifting movement and resistance training. Mama T's mission has been to draw students closer to releasing stress and inhibitions through the freedom of movement. The teachers and scholars at Gidney Avenue Memorial School certainly did!
