Newburgh-Inspired Exhibit by Horizons on the Hudson Scholars Makes the Rounds
Historical Picture of Newburgh Alms House paired with HOH Student Model at the Historical Society & Newburgh Open Studios Tour
With civic engagement, content creation and problem-solving on their minds, HOH 5th grade scholars (2022-23), delved into Newburgh’s rich history and culture. Scholars distilled the breadth of resources from various local repositories, community partners, and life-long residents. They made consequential connections between our past and present, and even proposed solutions to some of our challenges. Topics investigated were Artists In Newburgh, The Development of Lake Street Apartments/The Alms House, The Glenn Hines Boys & Girls Club of Newburgh, Historic Preservation in Newburgh, Newburgh’s Changes Over Time, Newburgh’s Musical History, Newburgh’s Settlers. Findings were creatively shared in the form of an exhibit with impressive models such as an interactive Crawford House, as well as models of Lake Street Apartments, The Boys & Girls Club, The Ritz and more. Scholars’ research and their exhibit were created for the annual HOH Exhibition, and the Newburgh, My Home Community Spotlight Project (NMHCS) 2022-23. NMHCS is a collaboration between Ms. Lisa (Kochik), Head of Youth Services, Newburgh Free Library, and Mrs. Wright Jumpp of HOH Library. The project was initiated in 2012-13 by Ms. Lisa, and executed annually by HOH Library with NECSD scholars, and their classroom teachers. This exhibit was made possible with the invaluable support of HOH educators Mrs. Dolfinger, Ms. Shirley and Mrs. Gonzalez-Heyes.
Interactive Crawford House & (The Glenn Hines) Boys & Girls Club Models on display at Newburgh Free Library as part of the RCLS Road Trip
The meticulous nature of scholars’ work was commended, and as a result, their exhibit became part of the Ramapo Catskill Library System (RCLS) Road Trip, with displays at the main branch of Newburgh Free Library, June 26 - September 8, 2023. Making the rounds, their exhibit was also on display at the Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands' historic Crawford House on September 30 & October 1, 2023, as part of the Newburgh Open Studios Tour. Their Alms House model was paired with a picture of the real property (as seen above) and was of particular interest since the Historical Society will be hosting a workshop on its history in November. Additionally, attendees to the Tour had a chance to view (via QR Code), Newburgh-inspired collages and accompanying Historical Riddle Poems created by HOH 5th graders as part of NMHCS, 2021-22.
