IBM Volunteers Visit Balmville to Spark Future Engineers
On Thursday, June 1st, Kyle Villano, a graduate of NFA P-Tech and Balmville School, visited his former elementary school (Balmville) along with other IBM volunteers. Kyle currently serves as the National Engineers Week (DiscoverE) IBM coordinator. DiscoverE is a program designed to spark interest in math and science in our community's youth to help them become the engineers of tomorrow. While at Balmville, Kyle visited many classrooms and was reunited with his former teacher Mrs. Crozzoli when he presented the day's activity to her class. The IBM volunteers visited several classrooms throughout the afternoon assisting scholars with the bridge building activity.
This year’s activity was split into two options:
1. Build the strongest bridge
2. Build the longest bridge
1. Build the strongest bridge
2. Build the longest bridge
Bridge building guidelines included:
- Work with your team to create the longest bridge using 12 straws, 5 notecards, and tape
- Your bridge must be at least a half a straw high throughout the entire length
- No taping the bridge to the desk – it must be able to stand on its own!
- Work with your team to create the longest bridge using 12 straws, 5 notecards, and tape
- Your bridge must be at least a half a straw high throughout the entire length
- No taping the bridge to the desk – it must be able to stand on its own!
While problem solving with team members, the students were engaged!
