Balmville First Graders Run "Food Justice" Food Drive
As part of the Social Justice Curriculum designed by teachers at Balmville Elementary School, first grade students used project based learning to study food justice. Students studied food insecurity, food deserts, food sanctuaries, and learned how to fight the hunger monster in their community! First grade classes ran and advertised a week long food drive. Students created flyers and posters and tracked progress using math models as part of their numbers and base ten math lessons. Slogans created by students included: "Food Justice for All", "Help Food Sanctuaries", "No More Hunger Monster!" and "No More Food Insecurity!" amongst others. All food was donated to our local food bank and students are proud to have helped with the Food Justice movement.
