NBCTs at GAMS Collaborate Across Grade Levels for Holidays Around the World
2nd grade students in Mrs. Gross, National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) and Mrs. Baird's class collaborated with 4th grade students in Ms. Matula, NBCT and Mrs. Kover's class to ask and answer questions about holidays celebrated around the world. Over time, 4th graders created a bulletin board that demonstrated various holiday traditions around the world through research and projects. Their bulletin board included maps and non-fiction articles that exemplified non-fiction text features. As 2nd graders studied these same topics at the primary level, they built background knowledge while they prepared to participate in small group Q&A sessions that the 4th graders would lead. 4th graders practiced commanding an audience as they presented information in collaborative trios while the 2nd graders practiced active listening skills and demonstrated curiosity as they sought out clarification from their older peer "experts".
