Temple Hill National Junior Honor Society Collects 3,426 Pairs of Socks
National Junior Honor Society members at Temple Hill Academy and advisors, Lina Lynch and Caroline Schwind, organized the school’s first annual sock drive to collect brand new socks for the homeless and those living in shelters or foster care. NJHS will be partnering with Iglesia Nueva Vida, in the city of Newburgh, to distribute socks at their monthly luncheon for the homeless. “Socktober” is a nationwide initiative that occurs each October. Every classroom at Temple Hill collected socks and NJHS students even sought out donations outside of the school. Local grocery store, Adams Fairacre Farms graciously donated the bags for collection. Eighth Grade NJHS member, Lucas Soto, fully embraced the community service project, collecting 2,280 pairs of socks. He worked with local businesses like Innate Chiropractic, Matson’s Deli, and the Corrections Department at Fishkill to help secure donations. Lucas described the experience by saying, “It was great collecting socks for my community; to see so many people give was a dream come true.”
