Letter for Heritage Middle School Community

Dear Heritage Middle School students, families, faculty, and staff,

It is believed that a student consumed product(s) containing an illegal substance today at Heritage Middle School. The student was sent to the school nurse’s office for triage and observance of physical or mental illness as a result of their consumption. As a result the student was transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. 

The matter is being investigated internally by the school district and all students involved will be subjected to the Student Code of Conduct. Additionally, the local police department will be conducted to investigate the source of the substance. 

Families should be aware of the increased use of illegal substances in adolescents throughout Orange County recently. Please note, some of these substances that children consume are legal to purchase and consume for those of a certain age, but are considered illegal for our school aged children. Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler recently issued a letter to all area Superintendent’s with additional warnings. 

Students may be consuming substances that appear to be standard food products, but actually contain illegal substances. These items may include, but are not limited to chocolate bars and gummy-like products (bears, worms, etc.). 

It is important that families act as partners with their schools to speak with their child(ren) about the dangers of consuming illegal substances and the long and short-term repercussions that are present physically, mentally, and behaviorally in addition to disciplinary measures that students may face as a result of consuming illegal substances.

A recording of the Parent Training Session: “Hidden Mischief” is now available to view at your leisure. The content will help families become aware of current drug and alcohol trends in teens and how families can educate themselves and have discussions with their children to prevent use and abuse of these substances. The information is presented by The Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Council of Orange County. The presentation is also in collaboration with the Orange County STOP DWI and Traffic Safety Program.

Estimados estudiantes, familias, profesores y personal de Heritage Middle School,

Se cree que un estudiante consumió productos que contenían una sustancia ilegal hoy en la escuela secundaria Heritage. El estudiante fue remitido a la enfermería del colegio para triage y observación de enfermedad física o mental a consecuencia de su consumo. Como resultado, el estudiante fue transportado al hospital por precaución.

El asunto está siendo investigado internamente por el distrito escolar y todos los estudiantes involucrados estarán sujetos al Código de Conducta Estudiantil. Además, el departamento de policía local se llevará a cabo para investigar la fuente de la sustancia.

Las familias deben estar al tanto del aumento reciente en el uso de sustancias ilegales en adolescentes en todo el Condado de Orange. Es importante que las familias actúen como socios con sus escuelas para hablar con sus hijos sobre los peligros de consumir sustancias ilegales y las repercusiones a largo y corto plazo que están presentes física, mental y conductualmente, además de las medidas disciplinarias que los estudiantes puede enfrentar como resultado del consumo de sustancias ilegales.

Una grabación de la Sesión de Capacitación para Padres: "Travesuras ocultas" ahora está disponible para ver en su tiempo libre. El contenido ayudará a las familias a conocer las tendencias actuales de drogas y alcohol en los adolescentes y cómo las familias pueden educarse y conversar con sus hijos para prevenir el uso y abuso de estas sustancias. La información es presentada por el Consejo de Alcoholismo y Abuso de Drogas del Condado de Orange. La presentación también es en colaboración con el Programa de Seguridad Vial y STOP DWI del Condado de Orange.
