South Middle School 8th Graders Open Hall of Minerals
Mrs. Piccone's 8th grade students presented work on the planning and building of a mineral museum that was opened to 6th and 7th grade students during the week before Spring Break. The scholars worked on various tasks to put the museum together. Then, they acted as educators on the days that the museum was open. Students worked on a variety of roles to put together the museum such as: planning the layout of the room, writing an article about the opening of the museum and what was featured, creating an interactive pamphlet that museum visitors used while touring the space, making rock candy and epsom salt crystals, and leading tour groups in demonstrations of how to identify certain minerals.
On Wednesday, May 25th at the Vassar College Transformative Classroom Learning Youth Conference, students reflected on the process in its entirety and shared photos of the different stages of museum's development.
