Update - Incident at NFA North Campus on May 2, 2022

Dear NECSD students, families, faculty, and staff,

I’m writing to provide you with an update to an incident that occurred at NFA North Campus on Monday, May 2, 2022. According to a media release shared by the City of Newburgh Police Department: On May 06, 2022, the City of Newburgh Police Department arrested a 17-year-old Newburgh resident pursuant to a collaborative investigation with the New York State Police, the Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for making a bomb threat that was reported on 05/02/2022. The threat was made via social media and was directed towards Newburgh Free Academy’s North Campus. The individual was charged with Making a Terroristic Threat and Falsely Reporting an Incident in the First Degree, both of which are class D felonies. Due to the age of the offender, the name will not be released. The individual was arraigned at Orange County Court and released on their own recognizance pending a future court date. The official media release can be found here.

Any student involved will also receive disciplinary measures based on the Student Code of Conduct. The district continues to work with multiple agencies to investigate other threats that were made throughout the district and will provide any updates that we can as they occur. 

The district and each of our schools is grateful for the quick and thorough response of each local, state, and national law enforcement agency who contributed to these investigations. We are thankful to have such strong partnerships with professionals who can quickly identify and thoroughly investigate these sorts of incidents, so we can focus on our area of expertise - educating our children. 

Parents and guardians should discuss the consequences of making false claims and allegations with their children. The words that people choose to use matter and can have long-lasting consequences, regardless of whether they are made in a joking manner or with the intended seriousness of those words. Local law enforcement agencies and district personnel that follow up on unintended threats take valuable time and focus away from other student issues, and can even distract from events that might truly pose a safety concern.

Estimados estudiantes, familias, profesores y personal de NECSD,

Le escribo para brindarle una actualización de un incidente que ocurrió en NFA North Campus el lunes 2 de mayo de 2022. Según un comunicado de prensa compartido por el Departamento de Policía de la Ciudad de Newburgh: El 6 de mayo de 2022, la Ciudad de El Departamento de Policía de Newburgh arrestó a un residente de Newburgh de 17 años de acuerdo con una investigación en colaboración con la Policía del Estado de Nueva York, el Grupo de Trabajo de Calles Seguras de Hudson Valley y la Oficina Federal de Investigaciones por hacer una amenaza de bomba que fue reportada el 02/05 /2022. La amenaza se hizo a través de las redes sociales y se dirigió al campus Newburgh Free Academy - North. El individuo fue acusado de Hacer una Amenaza Terrorista y Reportar Falsamente un Incidente en Primer Grado, los cuales son delitos graves de clase D. Debido a la edad del delincuente, el nombre no se dará a conocer.  El individuo fue procesado en el Tribunal del Condado de Orange y liberado bajo su propio reconocimiento a la espera de una fecha futura en la corte.  El comunicado de prensa oficial se puede encontrar aquí. 

Cualquier estudiante involucrado también recibirá medidas disciplinarias basadas en el Código de Conducta Estudiantil. El distrito continúa trabajando con varias agencias para investigar otras amenazas que se realizaron en todo el distrito y proporcionará las actualizaciones que podamos a medida que ocurran.  

El distrito y cada una de nuestras escuelas están agradecidos por la respuesta rápida y completa de cada agencia policial local, estatal y nacional que contribuyó a estas investigaciones. Estamos agradecidos de tener asociaciones tan sólidas con profesionales que pueden identificar rápidamente e investigar a fondo este tipo de incidentes, para que podamos concentrarnos en nuestra área de especialización: educar a nuestros hijos.

Los padres y tutores deben discutir las consecuencias de hacer afirmaciones y acusaciones falsas con sus hijos. Las palabras que las personas eligen usar son importantes y pueden tener consecuencias duraderas, independientemente de si se hacen en broma o con la seriedad intencionada de esas palabras. Las agencias de ley locales y el personal del distrito que hacen un seguimiento de las amenazas no intencionadas toman un tiempo valioso y se desvían de otros problemas de los estudiantes, e incluso pueden distraer la atención de los eventos que realmente podrían representar un problema de seguridad.
