GAMS Scholars Celebrate and Learn About Chinese New Year Traditions

Chinese New Year began Tuesday, February 1, 2022 and lasts for 15 days. GAMS scholars from Ms. Mazza (Reading Specialist) and Ms. Ciccone's (Math Specialist) second/third grade Boost classes celebrated the the festivities February 7th-10th. Ms. Mazza read the book "Sam and the Lucky Money" by Karen Chinn. The book is about a boy named Sam who meets a homeless man who helps him make the perfect decision on how to spend his "lucky" money.  After the reading of the story, red envelopes were distributed to the students, inside were gold coins of chocolate. 

The second and third grade scholars then learned how to write Chinese numbers 1-12. Using their newly learned skill, the students created clocks with paper plates and paper fasteners. They also learned to skip count by fives to tell time. 

 The children were excited to learn how to say Happy New Year greetings in Chinese and also were asked to write 3 goals they would work on to accomplish for the new year. Scholars read the article "Chinese New Year Traditions" as a reading comprehension activity.  The second and third graders then made paper lanterns for the Lantern Festival which aims to promote reconciliation, peace, and forgiveness and occurs on the last day of the 15 day celebration.
