Balmville Students Visited by 5th Grade Mystery Readers to Promote Literacy
We've heard it time and time again, reading is important. At Balmville school, we've built in other ways to show our students why reading is an essential life skill. Reading to another, and having a story read to you, is a relationship builder and a way of connecting with others.
Mrs. Crozzoli and Ms.D'Amico's fifth graders have been enthusiastically welcoming Mystery Readers who share a story or two with the class. So far, the Mystery Readers have been the students' former Balvmille teachers and their principal! They are hoping to welcome in a variety of other readers soon. Each reader gives Mrs. Crozzoli and Ms.D'Amico three clues about themselves which the teachers share with the class. Then, the scholars try to guess who will be visiting, but it's all a mystery until the special guest walks through their classroom door.
This Kindness Crew of fifth graders have also been sharing their favorite stories with kindergarteners. A pair of 5th graders visit the kindergarten every Tuesday and Thursday to read the whole class a story, paired with two or three guided reading questions. Their goal is to encourage young students to read daily, and find the adventure and excitement in a book!
