A letter from Co-Principals Regarding an Incident at NFA
December 4, 2021
Dear Newburgh Free Academy students, families, faculty, and staff,
You may be aware of an incident that occurred at Newburgh Free Academy late this week where a current student let two former students into the building. The two former students then engaged in an altercation with current students. All current and former students involved in the event have been identified. Current students will face disciplinary action based on the Student Code of Conduct. The names of the former students who entered and trespassed in the building have been shared with the City of Newburgh Police Department. The district will continue to work in collaboration with the police department as the case is assigned to a detective.
We recognize that this scenario is alarming for our students, families, faculty, and staff. Please note, this is an isolated incident. At this time, we have no reason to believe this event is connected to previous events in the local community. We are thankful for our security team who acted quickly to respond to the disruption in the building in a timely and professional manner. Additionally, we have two dedicated Security Resource Officers (SRO) from the Orange County Sheriff's Department that service our high school campuses each day.
The school, in collaboration with the district, is continuously looking to improve our security protocols and technologies. As a reminder, all students, faculty, and staff should have and visibly display their ID cards at all times. If your student has questions or concerns, they should talk to a teacher, guidance counselor, social worker, coach, or grade level administrator. Students should be reminded that Newburgh Free Academy is our school. Each member is responsible to contribute to a safe and comfortable learning environment. If any student has any information to share to help prevent future altercations before they begin, they should contact an adult in their school building.
Please discuss this with your child prior to returning to school on Monday. We ask for your patience as we continue to provide multiple layers of safety. We will continuously update our school community as other measures are rolled out
Thank you again for your continued support and collaboration.
