Dear NECSD scholars, families, faculty, and staff,

I’m writing to provide you with updated information and resources that may help our students process incidents that have taken place in the local community over the course of several days. The physical and emotional safety of everyone who enters our school and district buildings remains our highest priority. 

First and foremost, at this time, all schools and district buildings in the NECSD will open as regularly scheduled tomorrow, Tuesday, November 23, 2021. Law enforcement agencies from across the county will continue to support the safety of students throughout the community, especially during arrival and dismissal times. We continue to wholeheartedly agree that our schools are a safe place for our children. In addition to a quality education, our schools offer social emotional support, meals, structure, consistency, a positive social environment, and a safe haven for many of our students. 

We understand that the unrest in the local community may cause some anxious feelings to arise for our students, families, faculty, and staff. We ask you to remember that many rumors that have circulated have not ended up being true. Rumors are often just that - sensationalized by word of mouth and the media. 

We also need our families and community partners to play a major role in supporting our children during this difficult time. Please check on our children - whether they are your biological child, a relative, friend, neighbor, fellow church congregant, and so on - if you know a young child or teenager, please check in with them. Our young people need to know that they are loved and supported. It is also important that our adults act as role models when managing their emotions - especially when they do not agree with someone. Our children are always watching our behaviors for cues on how they, in turn, should behave. 

We are fortunate to have a good working relationship with local law enforcement and several community agencies throughout the district municipalities and Orange County. We will continue to work together with these organizations to develop a multi-tiered layer of support that will enhance the systems that are currently in place. 

Our Family and Community Engagement Team has put together resources that families can utilize with their children. Those resources can be accessed here.

If any student would like to discuss concerns, develop strategies to manage their emotions, or engage in peer mediation, they should contact their school guidance counselor, social worker and/or grade level administrator. Parents and families can utilize these resources as well or contact the district's Director of Safety and Security. The vision of the NECSD remains, “Through the work of all, we will achieve inclusive excellence.” Each and everyone of us owns a role in supporting and guiding our scholars to become leaders beyond Academy Field.

También necesitamos que nuestras familias y socios comunitarios desempeñen un papel importante en el apoyo a nuestros niños durante este momento difícil. Por favor, verifique a nuestros hijos, ya sean su hijo biológico, un pariente, un amigo, un vecino, un miembro de la congregación de la iglesia, etc. Nuestros jóvenes necesitan saber que son amados y apoyados. También es importante que nuestros adultos actúen como modelos a seguir al manejar sus emociones, especialmente cuando no están de acuerdo con alguien. Nuestros hijos siempre están observando nuestros comportamientos en busca de pistas sobre cómo ellos, a su vez, deben comportarse.

Tenemos la suerte de tener una buena relación de trabajo con la policía local y varias agencias comunitarias en los municipios del distrito y el condado de Orange. Continuaremos trabajando junto con estas organizaciones para desarrollar una capa de soporte de varios niveles que mejorará los sistemas que están actualmente en funcionamiento.

Si algún estudiante quisiera discutir inquietudes, desarrollar estrategias para manejar sus emociones o participar en la mediación de sus compañeros, debe comunicarse con su consejero escolar, trabajador social y / o administrador de nivel de grado. Los padres y las familias también pueden utilizar estos recursos o comunicarse con el Director de Seguridad y Protección del distrito.
