NFA Scholar Receives Full Four-Year Scholarship
Newburgh Free Academy North Campus senior, Tamiia Quinn is a finalist and winner of the 2020 QuestBridge National College Match, a national program that connects high-achieving high school seniors from low-income backgrounds with full four-year scholarships to the nation’s top colleges. She will attend Emory University, in Atlanta, GA, on a full, four year academic scholarship. Tamiia plans to major in Nursing and is considering a double major in Education or English. Prior to attending Newburgh Free Academy, Tamiia attended Garnertown Leadership Academy and Heritage Middle School.
While attending Newburgh Free Academy Main Campus, Tamiia was part of the Varsity Swim and Track teams, the secretary of Mock Trial, and a member of Key-Club, Science Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Italian Honor Society. Tamiia is a Safe School Ambassador and also worked as a Swim Instructor and Lifeguard.
Tamiia aspires to become a Nurse Practitioner and is interested in becoming a travel nurse for part of her career. She is also interested in secondary education or becoming a professor. Throughout her high school career, Tamiia enjoyed English as a favorite subject, especially with Ms. Dellate and Mr. Freedman. Tamiia noted, “Mr. Constiglione and Mr. Freedman were great human beings who allowed me to connect, explore my thoughts, and express my opinions without feeling judged; they are big proponents of my memorable high school years.” Tamiia also expressed thanks for her friends and family who had a huge impact on her success and keeping her motivated, diligent, and determined.
When asked what advice Tamiia would give to younger scholars, she said, “During your time in high school try not to focus so much on comparing yourself to others, embrace your individuality.” She continued, “Discouragement is a momentary feeling so don't let it stick to the forefront of your mind. Hard-work, diligence, and a clear mind will no doubt lead to success.”
