NFA West Scholars Travel to Albany to Advocate for Libraries!
The NFA West Student Government team travelled to Albany with members of the Newburgh Free Library to meet with elected officials including James Skoufis, Colin Schmitt, & Jonathan Jacobson. Students advocated for the passage of three bills that, if passed, could positively impact libraries across the state including our very own Newburgh Free Library. Students spoke passionately about the books that have impacted them; that they’ve been able to read as students at NFA West. In addition to these critical meetings with State Legislators, our scholars were able to explore bits of the State Capitol. To close the day, they were recognized inside the Assembly Chambers and welcomed to the "People's House."
Mr. Dennis Maher, teacher at NFA West coordinated 10 high school scholars to participate in the trip. Ms. Mary Lou Carolan from the Newburgh Free Library, and NECSD librarians Ms. Cathy Gilligan and Ms. Kathleen Finnerty also joined the group for the day.
