Second Grade Social Studies Scholars Explore US Symbols at Horizons-on-the-Hudson

As a part of the second grade social studies unit on democracy and citizenship, students explored different United States symbols in Ms. Andrew's class at Horizons-on-the-Hudson.

Students participated in several activities including working in groups to research a United States symbol in order to create an informative Google Slides presentation, contributing a mosaic-like patriotic quilt to represent the U.S symbols, and the creation of a 3D United States symbol replica using everyday materials.  The class then set up their room as a United States symbols museum where their 3-D replicas were displayed and students shared facts about their symbol to the other second grade classrooms.

"This was a great experience for our second graders because our class got to practice their presentation skills and share their creations with a wider audience.  This experience was beneficial to the other second grade classrooms  because their introduction to this topic became a first-hand experience that was student-led and presented by their peers". - Ms. Andrews
