Unlimited Horizons Program Begins Yearlong Project with Storm King Art Center

Students in all Unlimited Horizons classes at Horizons on the Hudson Magnet School took a trip to the Storm King Art Center recently to begin a yearlong project based on the “Follies” exhibit by artist Mark Dion. Each class had a specific installation to visit and focused on both the macro and micro perspectives of the pieces.

Students recorded their observations in Storm King journals that will be used as field guides, research documentation and inquiry endeavors throughout the school year. This will include Internationale Baccalaureate unit themes, concepts and transdisciplinary skills as well. 

After conducting further research on the selected follies, classes will work with Storm King educators/artists during the winter to create their own follies. The structure of this will depend on each class and student selection, with the possibility of group, partner or independent projects. Creative and narrative writing will be incorporated throughout. The field guide concept will be used in connection with each grade level’s curriculum goals.

In the spring, students will revisit Storm King to present their yearlong explorations to each other and to the community at large, including parents, administrators, community partners, school board members. This will be done at the Storm King Field Station, where a sample of their products will remain. Students might also create a performance piece to be shared at Horizons with the rest of the school.
