South Middle School Scholars Participate in Living History Day
Students in Ms. Alyssa Cruz’s class did a review of the Civil War in which scholars studied various perspectives of what life was like, especially for soldiers and slaves. The classes discussed reasons and events that led to war as well as analyzed strategies used during this time.
To complete the unit, Ms. Cruz organized a Living History Day. The event was a day for students to experience all they have learned first hand. They built encampment tents, dressed as a Union soldier wearing canteens, a kepi, and learned the commands used during battle. Students also learned procedures of firing and loading a mock musket, and experienced what it was like to be on the front lines of battle. Living History Day is a day for students to gain first hand experience by putting themselves into the times of history they are studying.
