Balmville MBK Power Hour Scholars Discuss Recreation and Athleticism

Scholars from Balmville Elementary School are participating in an afterschool program through My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) that offers personal development opportunities each week. During one session, scholars heard from Coach Lance Miles, a community basketball coach who discussed the importance of academic achievement for participation. Scholars also discussed commitment, hardwork, time management, and determination to reach their goals. The group also discussed the difference between recreation and competition and the importance of both.

In 2018, Newburgh joined hundreds of cities nationwide in accepting President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper challenge. Aimed at improving life outcomes and opening up opportunities for all youth, especially young men of color, Newburgh’s MBK initiative is a partnership of the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, local municipalities, and several community based organizations.

The MBK Power Hour program at Balmville Elementary School is coordinated by Ms. Jelisa Tonge and Mr. Richard Green, with special guest Mr. Danny Dottin, principal of Balmville Elementary School stopping into each session.
