Music has a direct relationship, and a major influence, on our children’s entire comprehensive educational program. It acts as a link between core learning and the fine arts.

Reading: Music improves literacy! In song reading, we support language development and comprehension skills. Early note reading deals with alphabet and patterns in preparation for note identification and sight recognition. Music addresses all of the following reading skills: awareness, the sounds of speech, phonemic awareness, phonics, informal assessment, fluency, vocabulary, spelling, writing, and text comprehension.

Science: Music is specialized, dealing with the scientific qualities of sound, acoustics, and timbre.

Math: Counting in groups of two, three, four, and higher is used consistently in all music repertoire. When teaching rhythmic values, we reinforce all the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions.

Geography: Music is common, but unique to every culture on Earth. Through music, we address multi-ethnicities and raise the awareness of the world around us. History: Music acts as a blueprint, testimonial, and archive to people and events of the past. Music is a guide through all time periods, centuries, and decades with historical composers, invention of instruments, and musical ideas and acts as a timeline for adding context to historical events.

Language: Students’ writing skills are reinforced through writing music notation, and creating lyrics. Most of the music we perform has its inception from western European civilization. Many root words, prefixes, and suffixes of Italian, French, German, and Spanish find their way into English. With an awareness of the terminology used, students gain significant knowledge of these foreign languages and gain a more thorough understanding of the roots of 11 the English language.

Physical Education: When starting and developing the wind and vocal musician, a significant amount of time is spent developing proper breath support and appropriate respiratory habits. In classroom music gross and fine motor skills are advanced substantially through dance and movement. Rehearsals, and classroom music, can be as intensive and exhaustive as jogging or swimming laps. As with all sports organizations, the concepts of teamwork and cooperation are exploited in the band, orchestra, chorus, and classroom setting.

Music is the universal language, which establishes a common band among all subjects and people. It evokes passionate emotions in the heart and rekindles vibrant memories of the mind. What an enormous impact music has on every aspect of our lives!
