South Middle School Celebrates Poem in your Pocket Day!
On Wednesday, April 17, students and staff at South Middle School participated National Poem in your Pocket Day! Students were greeted with poems on their lockers in the morning (posted by members of the 6th grade MBK), and were encouraged to read or recite their poem to an administrator for a prize! In classes, students participated in poetry-related activities, from reading their pocket poems, to listening to Slam Poetry, to writing their own original poems, to creating Blackout Poems from stories they've read. Outside of the cafeteria, students and faculty participated in writing their own creative poems, which were posted on our "Local Poets" bulletin board. Staff got involved, too, receiving their own pocket poems in their mailboxes, reading and sharing them throughout the day.
“Poem in Your Pocket Day was initiated in April 2002 by the Office of the Mayor in New York City, in partnership with the city’s Departments of Cultural Affairs and Education. In 2008, the Academy of American Poets took the initiative to all fifty United States, encouraging individuals around the country to participate. In 2016, the League of Canadian Poets extended Poem in Your Pocket Day to Canada" (Academy of American Poets).
