67 Scholars from NFA North Receive Security Certificates
Since the Security and Law Pathway began, it has awarded over 1,000 certificates to high school students from Newburgh Free Academy North Campus. This spring, 67 students received their certificate from the State of New York Criminal Justice Services. Once the students turn 18, they can utilize the certificate to begin work in a security field. Some graduates have noted that the certificate helped them to get jobs on their college campus as a resident advisor, a security guard at a local gym, retail security, or simply to open up a store in the morning and close it up each night. Every two years, the students are required to take a refresher course. If they complete that, the certificate they earn at NFA North is good for life.
Recently, four NFA alumni of this pathway graduated from the Orange County Police Academy and were hired locally. Additionally, another graduate of the program recently entered the academy and will work as a police officer for the City of Newburgh when he graduates.
Of all of the graduates from the program, more than 60 students have FBI or police certifications so far.
The lessons to earn the certifictate include: duties and responsibilities of being a guard, emergency situations, threats, civil disturbances, dealing with hazardous materials, disaster situations, communications and public relations, diffusing situations, access control, technologies related to security, and finally ethics and conduct.
The Security and Law pathway is taught by Mr. Michael Truncale and Mr. Timothy Toomey.
Family and friends were invited to attend the celebration. More photos from the ceremony can be found here.
