Initial Statement from the Newburgh Enlarged City School District Regarding the Grand Jury Report
Earlier today, the Newburgh Enlarged City School District (“School District”) received the Grand Jury Report from the Orange County District Attorney, David M. Hoovler, regarding matters involving the District’s attendance policies and implementation of APEX for credit recovery. Earlier this year, the District Attorney solicited documentation from the School District in preparation for Grand Jury proceedings to determine whether or not there was criminality involved in the manner in which School District attendance policies have been implemented during the course of the last few years. There were no findings of criminality on the part of any officer, employee or agent of the School District. The Grand Jury proceedings have been concluded and now the Board of Education needs to review the report and determine how information therein might inform changes to policy, procedures and the deployment of personnel to ensure appropriate and consistent implementation.
During the course of the District Attorney’s investigation, the Board of Education and Superintendent made sure that there was full cooperation with the District Attorney, in the nature of complete transparency and prompt access to any and all information being sought throughout the investigatory process.
The Board and Superintendent are committed to improving student attendance and modifying existing practices to better implement APEX. The Board expects to immediately work with District Administration, School Administration, faculty and staff to analyze and review the Report and consider changes to protocols, practices and policies as well as the recommendations in the Report. The School District actions will be presented at a public workshop meeting.
