Fifth Grade Unlimited Horizons Students at HOH Share Decimal Games

Fifth grade students in the Unlimited Horizons program at Horizons on the Hudson Magnet School recently invited students from the other fifth grade classes in the school to play games they constructed to practice decimal operations. The students in Ms. Hoffman’s class worked in small groups to construct the math games, which involved planning how to incorporate decimal operations, writing rules, creating an answer key and constructing the actual game materials. The games ranged from a challenge game called “Mathnite Decimal Royale” to a variation on Jeopardy (Geopardy) to a ring toss game requiring a pirate accent with its answers.

Students in the other classes were able to play at least two of the games over the course of a math period, and were assured that they could return to play them another time. Ms. Hoffman’s students enjoyed sharing their games with the other classes, as was evident by one student’s comment in a written response to the experience: “My favorite part was when we shared our game with other classes and seeing their reactions.”
