National Elementary Honor Society Inducts New Members

  The Horizons on the Hudson chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society held its annual induction ceremony on Friday, October 21, 2016, expanding its membership to 49 students. The 30 fourth and fifth grade students submitted applications and teacher recommendations, and were selected based on the four qualities exemplified by the Honor Society, including scholarship, responsibility, service and leadership. Students will need to maintain those standards and participate in a number of projects in order to remain members in the chapter.

   The ceremony was attended by parents, administrators and teachers and was followed by a breakfast celebra-tion supplied by families of the members and NEHS advisors. Students received a certificate and will now attend regu-larly scheduled Honor Society meetings.

   The chapter also launched its Kids Can! Fundraising effort last month with presentations by committee mem-bers to each of the fifth grade classes. The Honor Society’s annual food drive benefits the food pantry at St. George’s Episcopal Church on Grand Street in the City of Newburgh. Students at each grade level are encouraged to bring in non-perishable food and personal care items throughout a particular month. The items are then transported to the pantry by Honor Society students. The fourth grade will be responsible for donations in November.

   The Honor Society students are also working to support the school-wide service project to recycle bottles to help rebuild communities in Haiti devastated by Hurricane Matthew and will soon be organizing the annual blood drive. Lastly, the school store is almost up and will be operating during the students’ lunch periods.
