Scholars from Temple Hill Academy and NFA North Campus participate in Safe School Ambassadors Training
Scholars were recommended to be charter members of a new group that is forming in various schools
called Safe School Ambassadors®. Safe Schools Ambassadors is a national program that only a small
number of students are honored through selection.
What is the Safe School Ambassadors® Program and what is its function?
Schools across the country have recognized that students are very influential with their peers. They are
instrumental in establishing the emotional climate and shaping the behavioral norms on a school campus.
Students also know what is going on behind the scenes in school; they often know who needs help, who is angry, and who is being left out. Historically, adults haven't taken full advantage of students' power to help create a positive, caring culture in schools. The Safe School Ambassadors program works to harness the power of positive student influence to make our schools a more nurturing place.
After a two-day training, meetings will take place regularly, but will not be long in duration. Most of the activities that Ambassadors will engage in will be quiet and behind the scenes. They will be trained to notice, act, and support their fellow students during the course of their normal day. They might welcome a newcomer; interrupt teasing with a distracting comment, or simply model tolerance of differing people and opinions. They will try to link up people in need with existing sources of help, without taking on the responsibility of solving the problem themselves. For example, Ambassadors might let a guidance counselor know that a fellow student has lost a parent or grandparent, or reach out to another student who is sitting by himself all the time at lunch. We hope that their natural orientation toward being caring and involved will be enhanced by some additional training that will take place during the school year. Together, we expect our Ambassadors to have a subtle, yet powerful effect on the climate of our school.
