Letter to Heritage Middle School Community

Dear Heritage Middle School students, families, faculty, and staff,

The district was made aware of an alleged threat directed at Heritage Middle School this evening. Thanks to a student, their parent/guardian, and the Town of New Windsor Police Department, we were able to quickly identify the student who made the threat and investigate the validity of the claims. Local law enforcement officials have informed the district that the threat was determined to be unfounded. We are grateful for their quick response to investigate the concern and additional support that was provided to our school and district administration. Heritage Middle School will operate on a normal schedule tomorrow, Thursday, June 9, 2022. 

Please encourage your children to speak with an adult like a parent/guardian, teacher, guidance counselor, social worker, school psychologist, coach, or administrator immediately if they have concerns about something another student says or shares with them. The district often learns of this information from students. We commend their bravery for speaking with an adult when they felt that something was not right. The vision of the district is: “Through the work of all, we will achieve inclusive excellence.” This vision includes everyone in our NECSD community. 

Parents and guardians should discuss the consequences of making false claims and allegations with their children. Any student involved will receive disciplinary measures based on the Student Code of Conduct. The words that people choose to use matters and can have long-lasting consequences, regardless of whether they are made in a joking manner or with the intended seriousness of those words. Local law enforcement agencies and district personnel that follow up on unintended threats take valuable time and focus away from other student issues, and can even distract from events that might truly pose a safety threat.

If you see or hear of any threat, please contact us immediately and directly. Posting on social media is not the best way to investigate and resolve the concern. Sharing information that you or your child(ren) are aware of directly with the district officials enables our staff to act quickly and promotes a better opportunity for safety. We take every threat that we receive seriously, involve local law enforcement, and implement the necessary disciplinary consequences. We legally cannot comment on disciplinary action that is taken or share information about individual students. However, please trust that we are working quickly and collaborating with authorities to keep our schools secure.

Estimados estudiantes, familias, profesores y personal de Heritage Middle School,

El distrito se enteró de una supuesta amenaza dirigida a la escuela secundaria Heritage esta noche. Gracias a un estudiante, su padre/tutor y el Departamento de Policía de la ciudad de New Windsor, pudimos identificar rápidamente al estudiante que hizo la amenaza e investigar la validez de los reclamos. Los funcionarios locales encargados de hacer cumplir la ley informaron al distrito que se determinó que la amenaza era infundada. Estamos agradecidos por su rápida respuesta para investigar la inquietud y el apoyo adicional que se brindó a la administración de nuestra escuela y distrito. Heritage Middle School operará en un horario normal mañana, jueves 9 de junio de 2022.

Anime a sus hijos a hablar con un adulto como un padre/tutor, maestro, consejero escolar, trabajador social, psicólogo escolar, entrenador o administrador inmediatamente si tienen inquietudes sobre algo que otro estudiante dice o comparte con ellos. El distrito a menudo se entera de esta información de los estudiantes. Felicitamos su valentía por hablar con un adulto cuando sintieron que algo no estaba bien. Las agencias policiales locales y el personal del distrito que hacen un seguimiento de las amenazas no intencionadas toman un tiempo valioso y se enfocan en otros problemas de los estudiantes, e incluso pueden distraer la atención de los eventos que realmente podrían representar una amenaza para la seguridad.

Si ve o escucha alguna amenaza, contáctenos de inmediato y directamente. Publicar en las redes sociales no es la mejor manera de investigar y resolver la inquietud. Compartir información que usted o su(s) hijo(s) conocen directamente con los funcionarios del distrito permite que nuestro personal actúe rápidamente y promueve una mejor oportunidad de seguridad.
